Flymen Fish-Skull CrawBody- The CrawBody is a realistic, anatomically correct crayfish ("crawdad") exoskeleton made of the same synthetic suede material as the Fish-Skull Frantic Tails. They are easy to use enabling even a novice fly tier to create simple and effective crayfish imitations. It can be combined in different ways with Fish-Skull Sculpin Helmets and/or Articulated Shanks to create various styles and sizes of crayfish imitations.
Initially available in 2 colors- brown and olive.
2 sizes- small and medium.
The CrawBody offers some exciting, new fly options for targeting big trout and smallmouth bass.
Q: How many colors are there?
A: Initially we will offer the two basic crayfish colors i.e. olive & brown and intend offering more at a later stage. One of the great advantages of synthetic suede fabric is that it accepts permanent marker pen very well which allows fly tiers to make subtle color changes or markings as desired.
Q: How many sizes are there?
A: There are two basic sizes (small & medium). The small size will be a suitable size to match with #8 or #6 hooks and the medium size will be a suitable size to match with a #4 or #2 hook.
Q: How many CrawBodies per pack?
A: 8 bodies per pack.
Q: How do you suggest we weight Crawbody flies?
A: These flies need to be fished deep, on the bottom where crayfish typically hide. Tie your flies in a hook upwards position and use a weighted dumbbell or lead wraps on the hook shank to weight the fly. For the medium sized CrawBody, another good method is to use a small size Sculpin Helmet (which is luckily about the same profile and size as a real crayfish head).
Q: Will you have some CrawBody fly patterns for us?
A: Yes, in the near future we will be posting some basic crayfish patterns to give you some ideas and help you get started.
Q: How effective are CrawBody flies?
A: During testing they proved to be extremely effective, especially for trout and smallmouth bass. We suspect the key success factors are a combination of 3 main factors:
Profile the correct body shape allows fish to instantly recognize a known food source.
Movement the synthetic suede claws have a realistic action in the water.
Weight weighting the fly properly gets the fly down into the place where fish would expect to see crayfish.
